I Made It Monday #2 {Winner!}
25 April 2008 | by Jen in Sewing
This week’s I Made It Monday random drawing winner is: Violet Crumble! A fable* crochet pattern is this week’s prize! Weeeee!
…
I wanted to start of this post with a photo of this dress – finished – but this will have to do. All I need to add is elastic and a belt. I’ve been wearing it around the house as is today since it’s in the 80′s and loose is just more comfortable. Ha ha! Just like a real muumuu. I just need a hairnet and a box of bonbons and I’m good to go.
I made some more changes from the last one, for a better fit. The yoke is curved higher to sit better (can’t really see that in this photo) and there’s only a fraction of the ease as the original pattern. It’s funny how a dress can look so different in real life compared to the illustration. Maybe that’s why pattern companies use drawings instead of photos because they can hide all the ill fitting-ness of a garment.
I have been thinking about trying to sell a dress like this in my Etsy shop. I’ve been doing some research about copyrights and the public domain. (You know, fun stuff.) This pattern predates 1963 and, in fact, there’s no copyright mark anywhere on the pattern. (Meaning there’s no copyright to be renewed.) From my understanding this means it’s fair game. Woot! Has anyone else done any similar research? And do you think people would be interested in a dress like this?
Happy Friday sweets! And have a lovely weekend.
Oops, forgot to mention… I Made It Monday will be continued some time next month. Stay tuned!

Yay me! Thanks, I’ll take the mighty acorn pattern please
BR/BR/I love the dress again, but yes, it needs a belt on anyone with any semblance of a gut or else everyone would think you are preggers.BR/BR/You can totally use the pattern- that’s how all those fabric designers are able to make direct reproductions of vintage fabric patterns and sell them (I’ve seen a few out there that match vintage dresses and feed sacks I own). I just wonder if it will be worth the effort. It must take a while to make each one.
i would certainly want to buy that dress if you had it for sale in your etsy shop. about how much do you think you’d be selling it for? it looks like the perfet summer dress!
eliza, that is certainly a good question – still haven’t figured that one out yet!
Hi! I just found your blog and looove it.BR/BR/About copyrights — my best friend is a designer and works from vintage patterns frequently for her own use. In order to reproduce a pattern (I’m not sure about the finished dress, but I assume it’s the same) you need to be able to show three points of difference from the original. Adding or omitting darts, changing the waistband, adding buttons — anything, it just needs to be 3 points of difference. Hope that helps!
