My Studio (A Little Tour, at Last)
06 August 2010 | by Jen in Domestic
I don’t recall when exactly but I told you I’d post pictures of my studio (a fancy way of saying office) after I painted it grey (from bright yellow). Well, it’s probably been a couple of years now but here it is!

A perfectly styled room it is not. Isn’t it better to see how I really live? The most significant thing I’ve done to prepare for these photos was clearing off surfaces. I can’t help but live with stacks of papers (work, sketch, etc.) on my desk and sewing table but I figured that would be too distracting.
This space is really me, a jumble of all my favorite and mostly old-fashioned things. And I love pattern so much, I buy fabric just because of the print (I know many of you do the same!) and I’m surely running out of room. I’m also in love with old, delicate, falling-apart things (as you know) and now the north wall is looking a bit like a bricks ‘n’ mortar vintage shop with the Edwardian blouses and 1930s dresses hanging from it.

You can see my mother-in-law’s rug in the lower left corner of this pic, in front of the antique sewing thread cabinet my landlord gave me. Isn’t the lighting here a little odd, like I had the flash on? I didn’t though – it’s just the white morning light coming through the facing windows.

Below is my little nook which includes this unglamorous but functional Ikea futon. At least it’s a comfortable place for my childhood teddy friends.

Hi Totoro!

I’ll end this post with the seat at my desk, a place where I spend a lot of my day working, drawing and gazing out the window with my dear cat Spoo. (He often sits behind the curtain to watch the busy little house finches in the morning.)
I hope you enjoyed this mini-tour of my world. Enjoy the weekend!

I did enjoy it.
I especially like that you have a thread cabinet, the quilt a little place to perch on that futon and of course Lucy sitting atop the books.
Have a nice weekend
The thread cabinet and old quilt on the back of the sofa really stand you to me! And of course the sweet doll and other little stuffed critters here and there! You have a beautiful room….full of natural light! That’s the BEST! I’ve enjoyed seeing where you create…you always inspire me! ♥
Very nice Jen!! I only wish my space was as fun. I have to share it with the home computer, and some other stuff. Right now it is out of control, and annoying me. I wish I had your hardwood floors for one!
I’m in the process of redoing a space for my sewing room, and this is the kind of look I was thinking of. Part of the room would have a table space, but the rest would look like a comfortable living style room with furniture pieces serving as storage.
It looks like the perfect space to dream, work and create in. Very inspirational, thanks for the tour!
Such a beautiful, peaceful, yet intriguing space. I really love it, and I bet it makes a wonderful space to work in, with all your favourite things around you.
What a lovely space! I’ve always dreamed of having my own studio space but for now have to share the family dining room…… but have set priorities for the next house, along with a Kenwood mixer and a nice big American style fridge!
I love your Eiffel Tower lamp stand too! Very pretty.
Thank you for sharing. x
Oh dear !
I can’t believe someone could give away this fabulous sewing thread cabinet ! That has to be one of the most perfect pieces of furniture I’ve ever seen !!!
Lucky you !

thank you, dears! having my own space is a luxury and i’ve so thankful for it.
the thread cabinet is the home of all my art supplies. and it has a wonderful surprise on the backside – the best and most old-fashioned advertisement for thread! i don’t have the space to display both sides but i’ll have to show it to you someday.
Oh Jen! Your studio is such a dreamy place!!!
I have to admit, I love that you admitted it isn’t a super-tidy space. I always feel so intimidated by those really neat studio spaces I see pictures of, because mine is such a mish-mash of projects, papers and things that make me smile and inspire me!
I love that you’ve got things hanging on the walls (I do that too with a lot of my falling-apart vintage!) and pretty little pieces scattered about. Such an inspiring and lovely spot to work in… I’m dreaming of the day I have a proper house and a room to myself that I can put some antique pieces in to store things and have a little sofa to crash on!
Thanks for sharing these, Jen!!!

What a wonderful little space to work in! I am so jealous…my space is the kitchen table! I love that it is a true reflection of you and not a cookie-cutter of most craft rooms. It has real personality! And I’m glad to see Totoro has made a spot for himself.
Loved the tour! Such a wonderful space you have, I love that is a true reflection of you too – not just some magazine copy cat. I spied a little black mouse atop your bulletin board… is it paper? Very sweet little details<3
I love that little corner with the futon. I could sit there for hours. And hi Totoro!
thanks again, y’all are so sweet!
@ Modern Crush – yes, that little black mouse (or should i say rat?) is paper, part of a pack i got from michaels’ last halloween (it’s martha stewart).
LOVE the room! Much cleaner than mine.
And you have so much wall space! The light in there is wonderful, too.
How do you arrange your fabrics? By fiber content? Color? Mood?
Oh – and if you ever find the thread cabinet missing, you know who to write to.
xo!
what a lovely studio! Mine is a dark green color and I think about painting it lighter often.
Can I ask what color/brand grey you used? I am painting my living room and trying to figure out what’s the best one – this one looks lovely, not too dark!
Thanks!
I really like your space, everything in it is so lovely.
and that eiffel tower lamp is amazing!
